Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Roads and Paths   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:29 am

Your character's morality is what keeps it from utterly succumbing to the beast. Today, the Camarilla is automatically assigned Humanity. However, in the Dark Ages there were other roads to take. IF you choose to follow another road, then you must explain why you are and how it fits your character.

Keep in mind that Roads (aside from Humanity) are often times more difficult to play and may have serious consequences for your character that include Death. Roads must be played if you decide to take one.

If you decide to take on a Road, it will help to read up on that road - this can be found in the Dark Ages corebook. But for your convenience, a brief writeup on each is available. Again, credit to the staff of CoAL.

Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Road of Humanity   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:32 am

Road of Humanity

The followers of humanity see themselves no different in mind or soul from their fellow men. Reason on conscience guides their actions and beast's hunger and cruelty are disdained. Those still possessing humanitas use mortal values to suppress the beast within.

Ethics
-A man is measured by his words, his deeds, and his heart, not his birth or circumstance
-The ability to reason separates man from beast.
-Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
-All men are brothers
-Freedom is earned with dignity and justice

Aura of Conviction: Normalcy, the aura of those on this road work to suppress the unease their supernatural form inspires on others. The aura bonus is added to appear human.

Virtues: Conscience, Self-Control

Hierarchy of Sins
10 Selfish thoughts
9 Minor selfish acts
8 Injury to another person (deliberate or otherwise)
7 Theft and Robbery
6 Accidental violation of another (eg. drinking a vessel dry from starvation)
5 Wanton destruction, property damage for the purpose of destruction
4 Impassioned violation of another (eg. killing in frenzy, manslaughter);
3 Planned violation of another (eg. murder)
2 Casual violation of another (eg. wanton killing, feeding past satiation)
1 The most heinous and demented acts

Note: For simplicity's sake, just this path of Humanity will be offered. We understand there are more. This will be considered the morality path your character had when they were Embraced. If you are considering transitioning onto another path as your character develops, please let us know and we will work with you to figure out something to suit your needs.

Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Re: Roads and Paths   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:33 am

Road of the Beast
The feral followers of the Road of the Beast accept their destiny as the greatest hunters in the world. Abandoning civilization, they give in to hunger and savagery, and satiate the Beast in so doing, giving it no need to overwhelm them. They typically have no patience for scheming, preferring to act where others think.

Aura of Conviction: Menace – those in the presence of a Feral know that he is a true hunter, just as deer do when confronting a wolf. The aura modifier applies to rolls aimed at terrifying or cowing an opponent.

Road Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Ethics
-Exist in accord with the needs of the Beast
-Do what you must to survive. No more, no less.
-Mercy is for the weak. Only the strong survive.
-The past is over, the future is not yet written. There is only the present.
-Respect only the strong, and swear fealty to no one.

Sins against the Beast
10 Putting yourself at risk needlessly
9 Not challenging a weak leader
8 Killing for any reason other than survival
7 Avoiding contact with nature
6 Needless torture or cruelty
5 Making a sacrifice for someone unrelated to you
4 Refusing to kill when important to your survival
3 Failing to defend your territory
2 Showing mercy to an enemy
1 Abstaining from feeding when hungry

Path of the Grey Hunter
The Grey Hunters believe that living in civilization is necessary for survival. Because mortals live in cities and villages, Cainites must follow pursuit of its prey.

Road Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Ethics
-Civilization must become home to Cainites, as it is home to our prey.
-Alliances and agreements can be used to your advantage. Only a fool ignores a possible source of strength.
-The pleasures of civilization can delight the beast. Take advantage of them as you desire.

Sins against the Grey Hunter
10 Failing to offer hospitality to an invited or announced visitor
9 Avoiding an opportunity to hunt in the wilds
8 Not hunting an easy target when the opportunity presents itself
7 Shunning a gathering or celebration
6 Avoiding contact with civilization
5 Making a sacrifice for a stranger
4 Refusing to kill when important to your safety
3 Failing to defend your territory or your pack
2 Showing mercy to an enemy
1 Abstaining from feeding when hungry

Road of Heaven
Followers of Heaven accept the curse the Lord placed on them and seek to find purpose in it. Everything is part of God's plan, even the Children of Caine. The voice of the beast is Satan, seeking to lure the faithful into sin, so those of Heaven repress the Beast with their faithful devotion.

Path of Penitence
Mostly made up of low clans, members the Path of Penitence believe they are damned by God and must atone for their sins. Their curse is a condition that both tests their faith and gives them an opportunity to show God their damned souls are not beyond hope.

Virtues: Conscience and Self Control

Ethics

Path of Retribution
It is at once a divine curse, duty, blessing, and birthright to act as God's wrath on Earth - one that falls to the devotes few of the Faithful to sustain until the End Days. They believe cainites, having been stripped of their morality, are the hands of God on the physical world.

Virtues: Conviction and Self Control

Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Re: Roads and Paths   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:35 am

Road of Kings
Just as God ordained that kings should rule over men, he ordained that Cainites were above the mortal herd. The Scions believe that all cainites are empowered to rule, but that only the strong, the swift, the cunning, and the bold can seize the throne and hold it. Carefully controlled, the passions of the beast can raise a ruler up to greatness and give him the power to conquer his enemies and hold onto his throne.

Aura of Conviction: Command - Scions are destined to rule, and they know it. Those around them can feel their commanding presence like a crown upon them. Their aura modifier effects rolls to command or lead others.

Virtues: Conviction and Self Control

Ethics:
-There are only two roles in this world: that of master and that of servant.
-You are superior to mortals, made to rule.
-To master others, you must first master yourself and the Beast within.
-Only those who seize power gains it; only those who use power keep it.
-Your word is your bond. Without it, you are nothing.

Sins against Kingship
10 Neglecting your duty
9 Treating a peer with disrespect
8 Treating an inferior as an equal
7 Breaking your word to a peer
6 Behaving shamefully before your peers
5 Showing weakness in front of inferiors
4 Failing to answer a challenge to your honor
3 Treating a superior with disrespect
2 Breaking your word to your superiors
1 Breaking a sworn oath

Path of Chivalry
The Paladins see Chivalry as salvation to Cainite kind. One must act with honor in all matters, they must be deferment to their superiors and kind and courteous to their inferiors. Cainites are superior, but that their responsibilities are that much greater than those of ordinary mortals.

Virtues: Conscience and Self Control

Ethics
-The blood of Caine makes you superior to mortals, therefore you have the responsibility to protect and aid your inferiors.
-Duty comes before all else
-Honor is everything. Without your honor you are no more than a beast.

Sins against Chivalry
10 Neglecting your duty for any reason
9 Dishonorable acts (e.g. ambush, deceit, etc)
8 Treating another with disrespect
7 Behaving in an unjust manner
6 Behaving shamefully before your peers
5 Failing to come to the aid of those in need
4 Treating a superior with disrespect
3 Failing to answer a challenge to your honor
2 Breaking your word
1 Breaking a sworn oath

Path of the Merchant
A newer path of Kings, the merchants hold to scion ideals of ladder-climbing, deal-making, and self mastery, but for them, wealth is the key to power, self-mastery and hard work keys to success in business, and oaths and promises the cornerstone of a merchant's good name.

Virtues: Conviction and Self Control

Ethics:
-Wealth is the key to power and control
-Power can be just as effective behind the scenes, perhaps even more so.
-Your reputation is all that you really own, and is worth more than all the rest put together.

Sins against Business
10 Neglecting your work
9 Treating a customer with disrespect
8 Treating an inferior as an equal
7 Breaking your word to a customer
6 Behaving shamefully before your peers
5 Showing weakness in front of inferiors
4 Failing to answer a challenge to your good name
3 Treating a superior with disrespect.
2 Breaking your word to your superiors or clients
1 Breaking a sworn oath or deal

Path of the Tyrant
Tyrants understand the importance of vassal and oaths of fealty, but they care little for notions of responsibility and noble obligation. It is not the duty of the strong to look after the weak, only to ensure that they do not rise to rebellion. Honor and charity towards one's inferiors are useful tools to keep them in line, but nothing more. In the end, power and control are all that matter.

Virtues: Conviction and Self Control

Ethics
-Power is yours for the taking if only you have the will to seize it
-Honor your obligations, as they will earn you allies and loyal servants
-It is better to be feared than loved, if you can not be both

Sins against Tyranny
10 Neglecting the opportunity to gain power
9 Treating a peer with disrespect
8 Treating an inferior as an equal
7 Giving up power to a peer
6 Behaving shamefully before a peer
5 Showing weakness to inferiors
4 Failing to answer a challenge to your authority
3 Treating a superior with disrespect
2 Breaking your word to your superiors
1 Breaking a sworn oath

Path of the Vizier
Not all who rule do so from the throne. For the Counselors, power is a subtle game best played away from prying eyes. Counselors work in the shadows, pulling strings to make things happen. They desire to hold power without anyone knowing it, as cainites perceive anyone in power as a potential threat. Knowledge, cunning, and influence are the counselors weapons.

Virtues: Conviction and Self Control

Ethics
-Those seen to have power are targets to those who wish to seize it.
-Those seen to grant power are the allies of those that wish to seize it.
-Gather power subtly, use it wisely. Be seen as an ally rather than a rival.

Sins against Counsel
10 Neglecting your duty
9 Treating a peer with disrespect
8 Openly usurping power
7 Breaking your word to a peer
6 Behaving shamefully before a peers
5 Showing lack of knowledge in front of inferiors.
4 Failing to answer a challenge to your knowledge or integrity
3 Treating a superior with disrespect
2 Breaking your word to your superiors
1 Breaking a sworn oath

Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Re: Roads and Paths   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:36 am

Road of Sin
If cainites are damned, then why should they not indulge in their dark desires? Sinners exalt their newfound power and use it to satisfy every wicked impulse. They master the beast by indulging and feeding it, existing is cooperation with it. Sinners are selfish to the core.

Aura of Conviction: Seduction – the sinners are temptation incarnate, and they have the uncanny knack for knowing the desires of others. The aura effects roles that attempt to seduce or tempt others into sin.

Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Ethics
-You are already damned, so nothing is forbidden to you
-Claim the Beast and make it yours. Do not let it claim you.
-The night is yours. Take what you want and do what you will.
-Act where others hesitate. The laws of neither man nor God bind you.
-In the dark depths of your heart lies pleasure, if you have the courage to free it.

Sins against Sin
10 Acknowledging any moral restraint

Path of the Adversary
Followers of the Path of the Adversary lend an ear to all lessons their Beasts try to teach them, but consider this most important: In the end, your existence and soul belong to you and you alone. Neither God nor man have the right to condemn you. No leader, clan or cause is innately worthy of your unthinking obedience or loyalty. Adversaries are both relentless and patient in their goals.

Ethics
-You belong solely to yourself; suffer no man, vampire or god to claim himself your ruler.
-Free will is your most valuable possession - allow none to defile it.
-Destroy that which enslaves the souls and wills of others, and teach them a better way.

Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Sins against Rebellion
10 Acknowledging the laws of god or man,
9 Failing to indulge your desires
8 Failing to ride the wave of a frenzy
7 Refusing to aid a lost soul in need.
6 Refusing pleasure that injures no one
5 Seeking material gain at the expense of higher concerns
4 Refusing to act when necessity demands it
3 Refusing to kill when it is in your best interest
2 Refusing to feed when necessary
1 Encouraging false virtue or aiding its agents

Path of Cruelty
Those of the Path of Cruelty accept that their Beasts are creatures of malice and spite, filled with loathing not only for all things righteous and pure, but all things base and profane as well. To feed and tame such a Beast, the followers of this path provide it a feast of torments perpetrated against those it most despises. The Heartless are concerned only with causing other physical, emotional, or mental pain. Mercy is a vice they have long since excised from their souls.

Virtues: Conviction, Self-Control

Ethics
-The beast is a creature of the senses, hungry to please itself with both ecstasy and agony. Give its pleasures to yourself and its torments to others
-Serve your own needs first, no one else in this world will serve them for you.
-Mercy and Pity are for the weak. Excise them from your soul and come to your true strength

Sins against Cruelty
10 Acknowledging any moral restraint,
9 Failing to indulge in pleasure
8 Failing to indulge in pain
7 Refusing to bring harm to the virtuous
6 Avoiding injury to others for any reason
5 Turning down a chance for material gain
4 Failing to study pain in all its guises
3 Killing too quickly or without necessity
2 Refusing to feed when necessary
1 Displaying mercy for any reason

Path of Pleasure
The Beast is a creature of senses, driven by the instinctual desire for pleasure and comfort, eschewing physical pain and emotional distress. Adherents of this path tame their Beast through the application of sensual excesses of all types, exploring the outer limits of both human and Cainite sensuality.

Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Ethics
-The beast is a creature of the senses, best tamed by feeding it the pleasures it desires.
-Feel no shame or inhibition when seeking fulfillment; all acts of pleasure are sacraments to yourself.
-Avoid those things that bring no pleasure, for they arouse the beast to wrath.

Sins against Pleasure
10 Feeling shame for any reason
9 Failing to indulge a new desire
8 Failing to ride the wave of a frenzy
7 Any display of modesty
6 Associating with those who bring you no pleasure

3 Refusing to kill when it is your best interest
2 Refusing to feed when the opportunity arises
1 Encouraging virtue or aiding agents of virtue

Path of Screams
Darkly transfigured by the Embrace of Caine, vampires are no longer human. Followers of the path of Sin seek to understand the beast and propriate it, to explore and comprehend all facets of themselves, no matter how dark, and to achieve control of their entire being, self, and Beast combined.

Virtues: Conviction, Instinct

Ethics
-You are damned, and you server Hell on Earth.
-Virtue is a lie; defile and devourer those who claim to possess it.
-Freedom of will and soul is an illusion; listen to the demands of your true masters in the voice of the Beast, and do their will.

Sins against Damnation
10 Acknowledging the laws of god or man
9 Failing to indulge your desires
8 Failing to ride the wave of a frenzy
7 Refusing to kill when it is in your best interest.
6 Avoiding injury to others for any reason
5 Any display of pity or mercy.
4 Failing to act on behalf of your patrons
3 Any display of altruistic behavior
2 Acting against the minions of Hell

Roads and Paths Empty
PostSubject: Re: Roads and Paths   Roads and Paths EmptyFri Jun 12, 2009 9:38 am

Other Roads
There are a number of Roads that do not fall into the other five categories. These Roads are included in the Dark Ages Storyteller's Companion. These Roads have modern nights equivalent, however some of the tenets are different so should not be mistaken as having the same beliefs as those of modern nights.

Each of the following roads are primarily followed within a single clan, and even then, these roads are not the dominant road followed by the clan. As such, some of the following roads will be more restricted than the previously listed roads.

Road of Blood (Assamite)
Vampirism is not a right or a curse, it is a privilege not everyone deserves and therefore it must be earned. Purity of action and purpose must be valued and the beast must be denied control at all costs. Haqim is seen as the paragon Sentinel, for he is the noble warrior judge who opposes inhumanity amongst cainites.

Aura of Conviction: Resolve - Sentinels know the seriousness of their task and are incredibly dedicated to it. Their aura modifier affects Willpower rolls.

Virtues: Conviction, Self-Control

Ethics
-The blood of Haqim and Caine is a gift that must be earned
-The Beast is a sign of weakness, and it must be kept tightly controlled
-Purity, honor, and discipline are the virtue of the warrior
-Regulate your own behavior even more carefully than that of your neighbor
-Do not act rashly - consider each action before you take it

Sins Against Blood
10 Acting impulsively in any situation
9 Allowing actions to be dictated by emotion
8 Succumbing to frenzy
7 Failing to diablerize an unworthy vampire
6 Acting cowardly or dishonorably
5 Allowing the unworthy to go unpunished
4 Showing weakness before the unworthy
3 Failing to honor an oath
2 Submitting to the will of an unworthy prince or elder
1 becoming oathbound to a Cainite

Road of Bones (Cappadocian)
Cainites are caught in a single moment in the cycle of life and death - the moment between life and death. They are the embodiment of that moment, suspended and stretched out into infinity. Followers of the Road of Bones seek to understand the nature of the vampiric condition, its processes and its pace within the cycle. These scholars study death not only in the writings of others but in their own experiments and observations. They believe most spirits are reincarnated, so have no qualms in killing for the sake of advancing knowledge.

Aura of Conviction: Silence - The Scholars, accustomed as they are to long hours of quiet study and contemplation, radiate the stillness of death. The aura modifier applies to rolls involving Stealth and attempts to go unnoticed.

Virtues: Conviction and Self-Control

Ethics
-Approach your studies with wisdom and calm - never let passion be your guide
-Take every opportunity for understanding
-Never fear death - it is a natural part of the cycle
-Do not lose sight of the mystery that is our condition - it eclipses all earthly matters
-Do not needlessly sacrifice yourself - your endeavors are too important.

Sins Against Bones
10 Needlessly preventing a death or refusing to kill
9 Refusing to feed when hungry
8 Failing to study death when provided an opportunity to do so
7 Refusing to pursue experiments
6 Succumbing to frenzy
5 Allowing emotion to sway your decision
4 Refusing to share insight with others on the road
3 Showing fear of or aversion to death
2 Risking your existence unnecessarily
1 Giving your loyalty to anyone else above your road and clan

Road of Metamorphosis (Tzimisce)
Followers of the Road of Metamorphosis indulge the desire for individual transformation and look toward the transition to a further, exalted state of being. They hold that Caine transformed himself into a vampire and hold this accomplishment up as proof that any cainite can transform himself through strength of will and research.

Aura of Conviction: Inhumanity - Seekers work steadily to become something other than human. Aura modifiers apply to Intimidation, as well as any manipulation rolls that can be positively affected by frightening the target.

Virtues: Conviction and Instinct

Ethics
-Enlightenment and transformation are the same state of being. This understanding is the key to all change.
-Concern yourself with the state of your own being, not that of others
-Reject outward distraction for inward transformation
-Any vampire can transform himself through the application of research and will; only a select few can fully understand this precept
-The flesh is clay, to be molded and shaped as desired; we desire the perfection of the spirit

Sins Against Metamorphosis
10 Failing to ride out a frenzy
9 Sharing undeserved knowledge freely
8 Indulging in displays of emotion
7 Asking for knowledge that one has not earned
6 Denying basic needs
5 Avoiding necessary experimentation due to personal risk
4 Indulging unnecessary desires
3 Aiding an unworthy Cainite in understanding the Road of Metamorphasis
2 Avoiding necessary experimentation due to compassion or discomfort
1 Avoiding the alteration of one's own body

Road of Night (Lasombra)
The Road of Night cares nothing for the salvation of the vampiric soul, nor for the behavior of vampires in general. It cares only for humanity. Only pain and suffering can bring about true repentance of sin, and thus, true salvation. Cainites are damned and in that they have purpose as the Redeamers of mankind.

Aura of Conviction: Guilt and Remorse - Adherents of the Road of Night give off a faint air of the very emotions they evoke in the mortals they punish. They aura modifier applies to any attempts to elicit dirty secrets from others, or to inspire remorse in a sinner.

Virtues: Conviction and Self-Control

Ethics
-All Cainites are damned
-Our damnation is the price we pay for other' salvation
-Only pain and suffering bring about true repentance
-Without repentance there can be no redemption
-Do not suffer the corruption of mortals - stamp the corruption out at its source

Sins Against Night
10 Spending much time on the affairs of Cainites
9 Feeling remorse for your actions
8 Killing any mortal without taking confession first
7 Attempting to "save" a Cainite
6 Accepting the superiority of a Cainite other than those on the Road of Night or other memebers of your clan
5 Killing a sinner for any reason other than self-defense
4 Trying to save a sinner by means that do not involve pain and suffering
3 Allowing the corruption of mortals
2 Embracing a sinner who is still capable of remorse and redemption
1 Causing or bringing about the corruption of a mortal

Road of Paradox (Ravnos)
Followers of the Road of Paradox believe that all mortals have a certain purpose for being. Cainites are removed from their life purpose, but can find purpose once again. It is the duty of a follower of Paradox to return Cainites and wandering mortals' to their purpose. However, those of Paradox believe if anyone is aware of the Road's purpose, they cannot be gently led to his own understanding of their own destiny. Therein the Paradox lies.

Aura of Conviction: Confidence - The Deceivers believe that they are in the exact place and time they are meant to be, doing what they are meant to do, and it shows. The aura modifier applies to attempts to manipulate or lead others.

Virtues: Conviction, Self-Control

Ethics
-Guide others to their purpose for being
-Cainites and mortals must come to their own realization of their destiny
-Execute only those who absolutely refuse to accept their purpose, or repeatedly prevent others from following their destinies
-Keep your secret face hidden from those around you; only by doing so may you act with freedom

Sins Against Paradox
10 Allowing restrictive social conventions to go unchallenged
9 Failing to execute a Cainite who stubbornly refused to acknowledge his destiny
8 Embracing outside the family line
7 Allowing your subjects to understand what you're doing to them
6 Failing to execute a Cainite who repeated stops humans from working towards their personal destinies
5 Allowing those who are not on the road to see your true self
